Background
Originally from Limerick, I completed my studies in Aberdeen, Scotland in the Robert Gordon University qualifying with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 2009 before going on to complete a Master of Architecture in 2010.
I established SONARC to offer a more personal approach to architecture, working directly with clients from the initial ideas through to planning and construction. Every project is different, and I believe the best designs come from understanding the people who will use them and the place in which they belong.
In 2022, I was Commended in The Future Award, an annual honour presented by the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland in association with Architecture Ireland to recognise new and rising talent in Irish architecture. My projects have featured on RTÉ’s Home of the Year and DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland.
What I do
SONARC provides architectural services for new houses, extensions and renovations, creating thoughtful, individual designs that respond to the needs of each client and the character of their site. Every project is approached with a balance of creativity, practicality and attention to detail, with the aim of making the most of each space.
From initial concepts through to planning applications and detailed design, I guide clients through the architectural process, helping turn ideas into considered, achievable proposals. I work closely with each client to understand their priorities and provide a personal, tailored service throughout each stage of the project. If you are considering a new house, an extension or a renovation, get in touch to discuss.
The Process
01 Sketch Design
Sketch designs can be useful if you are looking to get some ideas down on paper before anything gets too serious. After meeting the client I will carry out a full analysis of the building and generate a sketch design with a combination of 2D and 3D drawings. Clients will then have a much clearer understanding of the project’s potential.
02 Developed Design
Once we have agreed on the principles of a sketch design I will then begin work on a more developed design to include measured plans, sections and elevations. With the addition of technical data and involvement of any required consultants the client will have a better understanding of the design and potential costs.
03 Planning Application
The planning stage is often the hardest and most frustrating part of the building process for the client. I have experience in working on applications for one-off houses, house extensions, schools and commercial buildings. As well as planning applications I can also assist clients in applications for disability access and fire certificates.
04 Tender Drawings
Following a successful planning application the building will then need to be developed further in order to form a detailed tender package. The tender package will form the basis of determining costs and will also work as the core of the building contract. This will help in detailing materials and the required standards for the project.
05 Site work
Once building work commences, with the assistance of Engineers, I can be there to monitor progress of work on site. I can assist in material and colour choices, amend any drawings if required, attempt to solve any problems that may arise, meet with other consultants as necessary and liaise with the client on the progress of the work.
